Clayton Douglas is set to launch the career of Blue Hotel with a bold move to stakes level, choosing to debut the filly in the Listed Dequetteville Stakes (1000m) at Morphettville Parks on Saturday.
Rather than starting out in a lower-grade race such as a Cranbourne maiden or the Listed Redoute’s Choice Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield, Douglas has opted to head to Adelaide in search of early Black Type for the I Am Invincible youngster.
Blue Hotel is out of Volcada, a mare raced by her current owner Jonathan Munz, who also bred the filly. Interestingly, Volcada won the same race back in 2007 under the guidance of Douglas’ uncle, Rod, now Munz’s racing manager.
Coming into Saturday off two sharp trial wins — one at Balnarring over Katsumi Orochi and another at Woolamai — Blue Hotel has shown promise right from the start.
“She’s trialled up really nicely and is a nice filly,” Douglas said.
“She’s a homebred for Jonathan Munz and the team. She’s out of a nice mare that Jonathan had himself and I’m looking forward to seeing how she goes.
She’s done everything right and she trialled nicely against the older horse’s last time.
Like a lot of things, race experience is key with a lot of two-year-olds, but she’s got the smarts to overcome things.
She’s done everything right. She’s put her hand up and I’m sure she’ll run well.”
Luke Currie was aboard in both jump-outs but won’t ride the filly on debut, staying in Victoria for a busy Caulfield card. South Australian rider Todd Pannell picks up the mount in Adelaide.
Blue Hotel has attracted strong early interest in betting markets, firming from an opening quote of $4.60 to $3.90 ahead of Saturday’s race.
