Anamoe gets his chance to add his name to a list of stars who have won the Caulfield Guineas as a short-priced favourite after TAB posted him $2.30 favourite following this morning’s finalisation of the field and barrier draw.
The James Cummings-trained colt, who was $6 joint favourite with Artorius when TAB released its first Guineas market on July 13, is set to become the 11th favourite to start $2.60 or shorter in the past 30 years despite coming up with barrier 15 in the 16-horse field. Artorius, the second pick at $4.50, has come up with gate two.
Of those previous 10 to start $2.60 or shorter, six have won, two have finished runner-up with a further two thirds.
Caulfield Guineas favourites at $2.60 or shorter since 1991
2018 The Autumn Sun WON at $1.70
2015 Press Statement WON at $2.50
2014 Rich Enuff 2nd at $1.80
2012 Pierro 2nd at $1.22
2011 Helmet WON at $2.20
2007 Weekend Hussler WON at $1.95
2006 Court Command 3rd at $2.60
1999 Redoute’s Choice WON at 10/9 ($2.10)
1996 Encosta de Lago 3rd at 4/7 ($1.57)
1995 Our Maizcay WON at 4/5 ($1.80)
Six other favourites who started longer than $2.60 have won the Guineas since 1991, but it is a race also prone to a blowout. Mighty Boss won at $101 in 2017, while Abaridy’s win at 250/1 in 1986 was Australia’s biggest Group One upset until Lunar Fox’s Australian Guineas win at $301 earlier this year.
