For over three decades, Denise Martin’s Star Thoroughbreds has successfully syndicated horses, winning multiple Group One races, but a Sydney classic has eluded the team—until now.
That could change this Saturday when Star Thoroughbred’s familiar purple and white stars are worn by Aeliana, the favourite for the ATC Australian Derby (2400m) at Randwick.
“We’ve won a Slipper, a Mackinnon, a Flight Stakes, and had an Epsom quinella,” Martin recalled. “I’ve longed to win a Derby and didn’t think it would be possible because we tend not to buy stamina-type horses.”
Aeliana’s acquisition has its own story. Chris Waller, who trains her, contacted Martin after spotting a relative of Star’s former top mare Invincibella at the Karaka Sales. Martin trusted Waller’s judgment and, with the recommendation of bloodstock agent Guy Mulcaster, bought the filly.
Aeliana has since raced nine times, securing three wins and two Group 1 placings, including a narrow second to Broadsiding in the Rosehill Guineas (2000m).
Martin, excited about Aeliana’s Derby chances, reflected on her 32 years in the business: “It would be so magical to win a Derby. It would be extraordinary.”
