Veteran hoop Craig Staples could be in line for a fairy-tale finish to the Karrakatta Plate (1200m) at Ascot this weekend, thanks to his long-time ally and trainer Paul Jordan.
Staples and Jordan share more than a professional relationship—they’re great mates, and it was Jordan who convinced Staples to delay retirement and keep riding, specifically to partner a talented juvenile named Castle Road.
“Paul is the only reason I’m riding still,” Staples told Racing WA.
“My main focus is with the jockeys’ association now, but Paul’s been my key trainer and we’ve built a great connection over the years. Riding a Group winner for him would be something really special.”
Castle Road wasn’t always easy to manage. Early in their partnership, the young gelding threw Staples off and caused a painful fall. But Jordan kept faith, telling Staples they had something special.
That promise was fulfilled when Castle Road romped home in the Listed Perth Stakes (1100m), leading from start to finish and winning by a dominant margin of over three lengths.
“He’s fast, but he can overdo it early,” Staples said. “Once he learns to settle, you’ll see an even better version of him.”
Castle Road’s improvement has been noticeable. Lisa Staples, Craig’s wife and regular track rider, noted a more settled demeanour in his latest work.
“Lisa was really pleased with his behaviour,” said Staples. “He was calm, and that’s a good sign heading into Saturday.”
Drawn in barrier four for the Karrakatta Plate, Staples couldn’t be happier. “It’s perfect,” he said. “He’ll jump well, find the front, and hopefully prove hard to catch.”
Castle Road is rated a $7.50 chance in Tabtouch markets, behind Yes Queen ($2.40) and Talkanco ($5.50).
