The Anthony and Sam Freedman stable will give Bistro the chance of taking on Melbourne’s best two-year-olds after her debut win at Sandown.

Bistro took out the IVE>Print Plate (1000m) on Wednesday and will be given a short break before being set for a potential start in the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield in February.

The Blue Diamond Series kicks off next month with the Previews (1000m) at Caulfield followed by the Preludes (1100m) on February 12 with the Blue Diamond Stakes two weeks later.

Ridden hands and heels by Jye McNeil throughout Wednesday’s race, Bistro, the $2.10 favourite, defeated Golden Queen ($4) by a length with Tanto ($9) three-quarters-of-a-length away third.

Sam Freedman said Bistro had been a pleasure to work with, continually making steady improvement which she showed in an impressive display on Wednesday.

“We expected her to run well, but you never quite know with these two-year-olds, they’re here one minute and gone the next,” Freedman said.

“It’s funny. We’ve got a nice connection with the whole family.

“Lee and Anthony (Freedman) trained her granddam (Estee) and her dam (Estaminet), so maybe one day we’ll get one out of her.”

Freedman said Bistro would now be given her chance at tougher grade while also extending out in trip.

“She’s gone over 1000 metres, so we’re a long way from that (Blue Diamond) grade but we might put her away now and give her the chance in a Preview or something,” Freedman said.

“She’s got to stretch out in trip, but she’s got a pretty good brain in the run.

“She was a little bit green in the run and she might be better with a bit of a sit, so there should be some improvement to come.

“A big thank-you to Godolphin, and hopefully it’s onwards and upwards.”
