A change in training routine has paid off handsomely for Adelaide galloper Dexelation who has registered a winning hat-trick with a late lunge at Cranbourne.
After wins at Morphettville and The Valley, both over 1000m, Dexelation added the Apache Cat Classic (1000m) to his record on Saturday and in the process took his prize money past $500,000 for his connections and trainers Richard and Chantelle Jolly.
Dexelation has potentially earned himself a brief summer break while Richard Jolly said the seven-year-old son of Ambidexter could be seen in better races early next year.
Ridden by Craig Williams, Dexelation ($3.80) registered a short neck win from the heavily backed Sir Kalahad ($3.80) with the $3.70 favourite Bless Her a length away third.
“It’s just amazing we have found the key to him, putting him back in these 1000m races,” Jolly said.
“Watching it, I was a bit worried in the run. I thought ‘he’s not going to get there, he’s struggling in the going’ but that last furlong, as soon as Craig gave him a couple he just lifted.
“The stable loves the horse, he’s been terrific for the owners and at the age of seven, you don’t expect them to put together three in-a-row like that and win good races.”
A steady riser up the handicap ratings this campaign, Jolly said Dexelation was likely to return a 100-rater following Saturday’s win.
“I never thought when he walked into the stable he’d achieve that,” Jolly said.
“It’s a real milestone for the horse and we’ll have to obviously look at the better races here (Adelaide) in our carnival, or back to Melbourne.”
Williams revealed after speaking to Jolly, the plan was not to get to the front too soon.
Despite the small field, Williams was locked away on the fence in second-last place on the turn.
“He’s such an intelligent horse and I’m grateful for the opportunity,” Williams said.
“Most importantly his winning performance, he wanted to win and it’s great for me in front of my home crowd to have a winner on the day.”
