An eye issue threatened to derail Amazing Eagle’s Magic Millions quest, but Tuesday’s Listed Gosford Guineas gives him the chance to get his campaign back on track.
The Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou-trained colt is equal favourite with Midnight Dynamite for the $200,000 event over 1200 metres at Wyong.
The son of Capitalist has not started since a second placing on Heavy ground at Doomben on November 30 but impressed in a 900m trial at Warwick Farm last Monday, when he split classy fillies Bold Bastille and Bauhinia.
A strong showing at Wyong is all that is required for the colt to seal his spot in the $3 million Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (1400m) at the Gold Coast on January 11.
“He got a nasty eye issue when he ran at Doomben and it took five or six days to get his eye right,” Ryan said.
“He is going to go to the Gosford Guineas at Wyong and then we’ll see if he can get into the Magic Millions three-year-old race.
“He always looked as if he was going to be better as he got older. Tim Clark rode him early and always thought he felt like a 1400 metre horse, so we’ll give him his chance.”
The Doomben outing, when narrowly beaten by Street Chase, was Amazing Eagle’s first outing since winning the Listed Brian Crowley Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on October 26.
Tyler Schiller takes the ride at Wyong, where Amazing Eagle is into barrier four in a field down to seven runners.
Amazing Eagle is an $26 chance in a Magic Millions 3YO Guineas market headed by last-start Group 2 Sandown Guineas winner Snitzanova ($6), while Bauhinia is the $8 second elect.
