After flopping at her first Sydney start, Merson Cooper Stakes winner Ebhaar has been receiving some tutelage on racing manners in a bid to resurrect her 2022 Golden Slipper campaign.
The filly started a short-priced favourite in the Widden Stakes last month but after racing ungenerously, she tired late to beat just one rival home.
Top jockey Kerrin Mcevoy has since partnered Ebhaar to a Randwick barrier trial win in which he was charged with the task of trying to help her strike a balance between using her natural speed and conserving some energy for the finish.
He is hoping she has taken some learnings from that and can rebound in Saturday’s Silver Slipper Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill.
“She is a quick filly, you’ve just got to try to harness that a little bit but at the same time you’ve got to meet her halfway,” McEvoy said.
“That’s why I will be trying to get her comfortable and happy, whether that’s in front or behind one, we will see how it pans out once the gates open.
“She needs to just back off a little bit come Saturday and do it the correct way. When you get to this level early in your career, you need to be able to do the work at the right end of the race, so the jury is out on her until the weekend.”
Ebhaar was a $10 Silver Slipper chance on Friday with her Widden Stakes conqueror Queen Of The Ball top market pick at $2.60.
McEvoy reported trainer Peter and Paul Snowden had been pleased with Ebhaar’s progress leading into Saturday’s assignment.
“They have been happy with her since and they were pleased with her work after that trial. I think they are hopeful and pretty happy with where she is at,” he said.
