The Hawkes family, renowned for their deep involvement in the racing and breeding industry, secured another top-tier win on Saturday, as Devil Night triumphed in the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield.
John Hawkes, a legendary figure in Australian racing, has a long history, from managing the Woodlands Stud team for Jack and Bob Ingham to playing a pivotal role in the transition to Godolphin. More recently, alongside his sons Wayne and Michael, John has continued his legacy with a two-state operation that balances quality with select numbers of horses.
Their most recent victory came when Devil Night, purchased for a hefty $1.4 million at the Magic Millions Yearling Sale, proved his worth by taking out the prestigious Blue Diamond Stakes. The colt, by 2016 Blue Diamond winner Extreme Choice, was a 16-to-1 shot, and despite a strong field, Devil Night held off Tentyris ($21) by a half-head, with Tycoon Star ($17) taking third.
This win marked the Hawkes family’s second victory in this historic race, following Kusi’s triumph in 2003, and was a second Blue Diamond win for jockey Michael Dee, who won on Little Brose in 2023.
Wayne Hawkes expressed his gratitude to Yulong Stud, praising their commitment to the sport and investment in the horse. “They’ve put their money where their mouth is, and Mr. Zhang deserves every success,” Wayne remarked.
Devil Night’s victory has further solidified his value and place in the breeding barn, ensuring a future on Yulong’s roster.
