Greg Eurell debutant looks The Real Thing

Greg Eurell has unearthed another promising two-year-old in the space of four days with The Real Thing scoring on debut at Sandown.

Lincoln Square produced the goods for Eurell at Caulfield last Saturday before The Real Thing took to the track in the Ladbroke It! Plate (1000m) on Wednesday.

Eurell was asked if The Real Thing was better than Lincoln Square.

“All I could say was I hope he is,” Eurell said as he watched the two-year-old son of Real Impact return to scale after Wednesday’s win.

Ridden by Damien Thornton, The Real Thing ($15) came from last position to score a 1-½ length win over Valenconi ($21) with She Daresthe Devil ($8.50) three-quarters-of-a-length away third.

Eurell said it was not an easy watch for connections early in the race.

“He did so much wrong,” Eurell said.

“Where he got early in the run to where he ended up, it looked a bit ugly early, but once he straightened up you could see him really start to build momentum and once he got there it all happened.

“I will have to see how he pulls up. I thought he’d probably only have one run and then he’d be out, but we’ll have a look to see what else is available with him.

“He’ll stretch out a bit more this guy and once he learns a bit more about what he’s doing, he’ll be a bit better again.”

Thornton was impressed with the victory of The Real Thing and said the gelding would be even better once he gets out over a bit more ground.

“He was quite impressive and is looking for seven furlongs as well,” Thornton said.

“He’s got scope to improve.

“It was a funny run. He couldn’t go with them early, but then he picked up and we had to wait to come to the outside.

“He showed a nice a nice turn of foot and he’s going to develop into a nice horse.”
