Ciaron Maher was left in awe after Jimmysstar capped a breakthrough campaign with victory in the All Aged Stakes, completing a Group 1 double that firmly established the gelding as one of the stable’s rising stars.
Now, the focus may shift to Queensland, with a start in the Group 1 Kingsford Smith Cup (1300m) at Eagle Farm on June 1 a possibility.
“It’s still a big ‘if’,” Maher’s assistant trainer Jack Turnbull said. “The key thing is that he’s pulled up well after the weekend.”
Jimmysstar returned from a spell to win the Oakleigh Plate, then added the All Aged Stakes, and also picked up a placing in the William Reid — form that Turnbull says ranks him among the top performers in the yard this season, just behind Australian Cup winner Light Infantry Man.
Saturday’s All Aged win earned him a Racing and Sports rating of 122, further validating his status among the top sprinting-milers in the country.
“He’s in great shape, but we’ve got a few different options to consider for spring,” Turnbull added. “If we don’t go to Brisbane, we may freshen him up and look toward an Everest prep, maybe resuming in The Shorts.”
Jimmysstar is currently second favourite at $6 for the Kingsford Smith Cup, with Giga Kick the market leader at $4.50, per betting sites.
