Trainer Michael Lane is optimistic about The Boss Lady’s future, believing the promising mare has what it takes to step up in class both in the coming weeks and later during the Ascot carnival.
Lane is eager to see how she measures up in upcoming races, hoping she continues to rise to the challenge.
The Boss Lady took a step in the right direction on Monday with a comfortable trial run at Bunbury, where she placed second in a four-horse field.
Having been bred by Lane, this was her first public trial since showcasing her talent in last year’s campaign at Ascot.
Lane intends to manage her workload carefully but is keen to test her against strong sprinters in major feature races.
Her stunning performances at the 2024 Pinnacles carnival at Ascot, including a three-race winning streak, have bolstered Lane’s belief in her ability. She particularly impressed with her black-type breakthrough victory in the Jungle Dawn Classic (1400m).
“The plan is to run in the Roma Cup first, then decide between The Joey and The Quokka,” Lane said.
“They’re both scheduled for the same day, so her Roma Cup performance will dictate our next step.”
“It’s a significant jump in competition, but we trust her ability. Ideally, we’ll go from the Roma Cup to Quokka Day.”
“I know she has to step up in class, but if the Quokka isn’t the right fit, The Joey is a solid alternative.”
“Either way, having her compete at a high level is a great position to be in.”
The Boss Lady had a relaxed trial run over 900m at Bunbury.
Jockey Chris Parnham guided her effortlessly to the finish line without pushing her to the limit.
Lane was satisfied with her performance.
“I thought she went really well today,” Lane said.
“It was exactly what we wanted—a gentle hit-out.”
“She’s progressing nicely, and I’m happy with her condition.”
“She’s built solid muscle, and her weight is right where we want it.”
“She had a minor blow, which was expected.”
“That’s why we’re heading to Belmont trials next Monday for another run.”
The Group 3 Roma Cup (1100m) is set to take place at Ascot on April 12.
The $5 million Quokka (1200m) and $200,000 Joey (1200m) are scheduled two weeks later.
