Trainer Matt Cumani is hoping to cement a start in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic with Cover Star on Boxing Day.
However, Cumani is unsure just where the daughter of Star Witness will run with options at Caulfield, Geelong and Randwick.
Cover Star made an impressive debut failing narrowly in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1000m) at Ballarat last month and the $45,000 in prize money she picked up places her in 11th spot in the Order of Entry into the $2 million race over 1200m at the Gold Coast on January 15.
Cumani said a lot can change between now and race day while the $45,000 in prize money would have given the filly a start in two of the past five running’s of the race.
“We’re trying to work out what path we take to get her up there and we’ve got three options,” Cumani said.
“There’s an 1100-metre maiden at Geelong on Boxing Day, a 1200-metre two-year-old handicap at Caulfield on the same day or there’s an 1100-metre two-year-old race on the same day at Randwick.
“I think more than likely we’ll go to Caulfield.
“Two-year-old form can be very hairy so we’ll see how she runs, but I thought she was particularly tough at her debut after being out wide and it looked like she could improve off it.”
After the Ballarat performance, Cumani sent Cover Star off to freshen up before again starting the build-up towards the Magic Millions.
“She had a week on the grass after that run and a week on the treadmill and we’ve picked up where she left off,” Cumani said.
“She has had a gallop on the Sydney leg and has done that well and we’ll keep mixing up the direction of her gallops, but we want to make sure we get her right for Boxing Day.”
