Champion trainer Chris Waller could soon add another Group 1 win to his resume, with exciting filly Movin Out set to target the Australasian Oaks (2000m) after a commanding performance at Mornington.
Making her Victorian debut, the New Zealand-bred three-year-old stormed home to win the Mornington Guineas (1600m) on Saturday. Ridden confidently by Ben Melham, she swept past the field to claim a 2-½ length win over Storm Season ($6), with Fear No Evil ($5.50) another half-head back in third.
It was a breakthrough moment for Movin Out, who began her career in New Zealand and has now had three runs in Australia under Waller’s care—two in Sydney before Saturday’s success in Melbourne.
“She’s a quirky character and everyone in the Melbourne stable and Sydney stable would agree with that,” said Waller’s Melbourne foreperson Lizzie Collett.
“She did everything right today. She settled, she relaxed, she was quiet and settled in the mounting yard, so I was very happy with her.
“The plan is hopefully to go to the Oaks next week in Adelaide.
“We’ll give her a quiet week. Treat her quietly, take her to the beach a couple of times, let her rest and recover, and then hopefully she travels up on Thursday night.”
Movin Out had previously run fourth over 1500m in her Australian debut before stepping up to 2000m in the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes. Saturday’s win confirmed her readiness for another try at Group 1 level.
Melham was full of praise after the race, saying the filly is still learning but has serious upside.
“Even though she was a bit more switched on today, she was shying at everything going to the barrier and after the race,” Melham said.
“She’s still got a bit of a baby brain, but she gives you a great feel and hopefully she can stretch out in distance and if she can, she will be a serious horse.”
