Weight no worries for Jamie Kah at Moonee Valley

Punters looking for a guide need only to look to Jamie Kah riding at 50kg early in the spring.

Jamie Kah says she will have no problems getting down to 50kg to ride Coolangatta in the Group 2 McEwen Stakes at Moonee Valley.

The 1000m dash at weight-for-age on Saturday will be the first time Kah has ridden the filly under race conditions.

Kah replaces James McDonald on the Ciaron Maher and David Eustace-trained filly who has three wins and a third from four starts.

“I’ve done both her trials and she’s come back super,” Kah said.

“She’s a pretty light filly and hasn’t done much work in between, but she’s definitely fit enough for the assignment this weekend.

“She’s got to go and make that step up as the three-year-olds do but so far she’s doing everything right and hopefully they can’t catch her on Saturday with that weight.”

Kah said she has no concerns getting down to ride the filly at 50kg on Saturday despite being a ‘couple of kilos’ over at this stage.

She said she rode at 50kg comfortably in the Group 1 The Doncaster in Sydney during the autumn, finishing fourth aboard Forbidden Love.

And there is the bonus of getting down to 50kg early in the spring as it will open options for Kah.

“Normally I wouldn’t have thought about doing this weight, but it shouldn’t be too hard as I’ve been pretty light over the last year or so,” Kah said.

“I did 50 in The Doncaster in Sydney. That was easy but coming back from holidays, I put on a couple of kilos and being winter it’s not as easy to lose.”

Kah said she had been disciplined with her eating over the past couple of weeks as she looks to lose the last bit of weight.

“I’ll probably have to sweat the last kilo, but most jockeys do anyway,” she said.

“I’m looking forward to riding her (Coolangatta) and hopefully it’ll be all worthwhile.”
