One race at a time for Equivocal

The Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young stable will await the return run of Equivocal before committing to a Blue Diamond Stakes start.

After loading the bases with four nominations for a Group 3 two-year-old race at Caulfield, Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young will rely upon just the one starter.

Equivocal will line up in the Chairman’s Stakes (1000m) on Saturday, looking to add her name to an honour roll that includes Blue Diamond winners Road To Success and Extreme Choice (2016), Golden Slipper winner Crystal Lily and Subscribe, who as Vengeance Of Rain became a champion in Hong Kong.

Busuttin is not prepared to dream of running in the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on February 26, focussing solely on Saturday’s race for two-year-olds.

“She still holds a nom, as most of them do, but we’re thinking one race at the moment,” Busuttin said.

“If she happened to come and win, I’d presume we’d have a look at it, but it’s a Group race on Saturday and if she can win that then she’s a valuable filly.

“Her target is all about Saturday at this stage.”

Equivocal has raced once, finishing fourth to Semillion at The Valley last October.

Busuttin said the daughter of Lonhro had spelled well and had prepared well for her racing return.

“She’s drawn a sticky gate, it’s not ideal, so Michael Dee will have to sort that out,” Busuttin said.

Busuttin and Young decided to split the team for Saturday’s race with debutant Loveknot heading to Pakenham on Thursday night while Red Rapid is set to run at Ballarat next Tuesday.

With Bonheur, Busuttin said they felt the 1000m trip would be too short and she would be better placed running in the Group 2 Blue Diamond Prelude (1100m) at Caulfield on Saturday week.

“She’s a 1200, 1400-metre filly, so we thought the 1100 metres of the Prelude would suit her rather than the 1000 metres,” Busuttin said.

Busuttin said Bonheur had run well on debut but found Philosopher too speedy when third over 1000m at Caulfield on January 8.
