Overpass is poised to chase history on Saturday as he aims for a third straight win in the $5 million The Quokka, Western Australia’s most lucrative race.

The gelding boasts a perfect strike rate at Ascot over 1200 metres, having already secured dual wins in The Quokka and back-to-back victories in the Winterbottom Stakes.

This time around, trainer Bjorn Baker has opted for a different route, choosing to run Overpass second-up rather than fresh, following a close second to Briasa in the T J Smith Stakes at Randwick.

“I’m looking forward to getting back over there,” Baker said. “It has become my second home at the back end of autumn and summer.”

“Overpass travelled over really well and we’ve followed a similar routine over the last couple of years. He didn’t do too much in the TJ and looks to have come through it well.”

“If anything, he looks better this time, and staying at Simon Miller’s again means everything’s familiar.”

Baker believes Ascot suits Overpass down to the ground thanks to his ability to control races.

“He’s got that high cruising speed, can jump, travel and absorb pressure — that’s his trademark,” he said. “Even after all he’s won, I think his most recent Winterbottom might’ve been his best win yet.”

Despite being a leading contender once again, Baker still approaches The Quokka with caution.

“He’s always been a little underrated, maybe even by us. But he’s looked even better this time,” he said.

Overpass is the $2.30 favourite in pre-race markets, ahead of Headwall at $6 and Front Page at $8.

“You’ve got to respect the field. Headwall, Front Page — they’re good horses. And the local runners always step up. But he’s in great order, and he’s been a dream to train.”
