The recent TABtouch Pinjarra Cup has once again underscored the significant social and economic role of the State’s Country Cups, with Racing and Wagering WA chair Karen Farley hailing the event as a success.
Around 4000 punters gathered at the picturesque Pinjarra Park, following a similar crowd at last month’s Magic Millions Raceday at the same venue.
“Regional racing plays an important role right around WA – not only economically, but also from a social standpoint, which was on full display at the Pinjarra Cup,” Karen said.
“The Pinjarra Race Club, like many race clubs around WA, provides a great social hub for the community to connect and enjoy a fantastic day of racing,” she added.
With 49 race clubs across the State, the industry supports over 10,000 jobs. Racegoers at the Pinjarra Cup enjoyed both high-quality racing and a vibrant atmosphere.
Steve Wolfe’s gelding Currumundi, ridden by Shaun “Shooter” McGruddy, triumphed in the Cup, defeating Captain Pluto, while Wolfe and McGruddy also won the Bluff Knoll slot race in Albany.
Pinjarra Race Club chairman Phil Ibbotson highlighted the importance of the Cup to the local community, calling it the region’s biggest social event of the year.
Karen Farley noted the need for upgrades, particularly in female jockey facilities, reinforcing the value of the Cook Government’s $25 million regional racing infrastructure fund.
The “Country Cups” series continues this Sunday with the TABtouch Geraldton Gold Cup.
