Progressive stayer Revelare is set to tackle his longest trip yet, with trainer Robert Hickmott confirming the in-form galloper will contest a 2400m handicap at Caulfield this Saturday.
The rising star has been unstoppable in recent months, racking up five straight victories since finishing second at Seymour in December. With wins at both Sandown and Flemington—including two consecutive triumphs over 2000m—Revelare is now being prepared for an even greater challenge.
Hickmott has his sights set on the Listed Roy Higgins (2600m) at Flemington on March 29, a race that offers a direct path to the Melbourne Cup. Following advice from seven-time Cup-winning owner Lloyd Williams, Hickmott believes a 2400m run is a necessary stepping stone.
“It’s a nice little progression and all going well he’ll go there,” Hickmott said.
“Depending on what weight he gets will determine who rides him.”
Jockey Ryan Hurdle has guided Revelare in all six of his outings this campaign, but his ability to retain the ride will depend on the weight allocation. Hurdle, who competed at Murray Bridge on Saturday, struggles to ride below 56kg.
“If he gets Ryan’s weight, he’ll ride him, but if he doesn’t, I’m sure there will be a few putting their hands up to ride him,” Hickmott said.
“Anything below 56 (kilos) will probably pull Ryan up, but he’s been over in Adelaide, and it’s been pretty warm over there, so we’ll see how he goes.
“The Roy Higgins will be the next target, but first we’ll see how he comes through this run.”
A victory in the Roy Higgins would grant Revelare a ballot exemption into the Melbourne Cup (3200m) at Flemington in November, giving him a direct path to the prestigious event.
