Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou have their fingers crossed the weather holds up at Randwick this weekend, with their three-pronged team headlined by consistent galloper Grebeni.
Grebeni is being set for a crack at the Scone Cup on May 16, but he’ll first line up in Saturday’s Precise Air Handicap (1500m) — assuming the track doesn’t shift into the heavy range.
He brings good form, having placed in the Newcastle Stakes before finishing second in the Muswellbrook Cup last start. The latter was a backup plan when rain ruled him out of the Doncaster Prelude.
“He likes his runs spaced and he had a big day that day at Muswellbrook,” Ryan said.
“There wasn’t much for him in between. We were going to trial him and then go to Hawkesbury and Scone but we thought he might be better off running in this race at Randwick and then going straight to Scone from here with three weeks between runs. He is going terrific.”
Queensland is a potential longer-term option, but the team is taking things one run at a time.
Pajanti will also resume in the Neville Waters Handicap (1200m). The mare has a strong first-up record and was competitive in black-type company during summer.
“She was a bit stiff in the (Listed) Mona Lisa Stakes. She missed the kick and got back and she perhaps should have run a place,” Ryan said.
“We will just hang around Saturday grade and if there is a stakes race for the mare it might be something like the Gai Waterhouse Classic later on.”
Rounding out their team is debutant Grand Eagle, who kicks off proceedings in the first race of the day.
