Stokes looks to add blacktype to stable’s tally at Morphettville

Phillip Stokes has his eyes set on blacktype glory this Saturday at Morphettville, with fillies Comanche Miss and Pelevecchio in the Clare Lindop Stakes (1600m).

The pair aim to secure valuable blacktype before a wave of fillies challenge in bigger races in the coming weeks.

Comanche Miss is on track for the Australasian Oaks (2000m) and may follow the traditional path through the Group 3 Auraria Stakes (1800m) on April 12.

Trained at Stokes’ Victorian base in Pakenham, Comanche Miss has yet to win after seven starts, though she has achieved a blacktype placing.

“She’s Stakes placed but hasn’t won a race yet,” Stokes said. “She’s showing all the signs of being a 2000m horse.”

Pelevecchio, who triumphed at Morphettville in December, finished fifth in the Listed Morphettville Guineas (1600m) on Adelaide Cup Day, behind stablemate Gala Queen.

“I think she’s got a good pedigree, and this will likely be her last run before a break,” Stokes said. “I think Comanche Miss is going better right now, but they’re both in good shape.”
