Time to turn on Charm in the G1 Robert Sangster Stakes

Charm Stone is set to launch her comeback in Saturday’s Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) at Morphettville, with trainers Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr confident she’s ready to return to form.

The mare hasn’t been seen since a runner-up finish on the Gold Coast in January and is chasing her first win since last year’s Atlantic Jewel Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley.

Charm Stone also took out a race at Caulfield just prior to that and was sent to the Golden Rose (1400m) in 2023, where she finished fifth before injury struck.

Following surgery to remove a bone chip in her knee, Charm Stone endured a lengthy recovery, making her racing return more than a year after her Golden Rose run. Her best spring effort was a third-place finish over 1200m at Flemington, before a midfield run in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m).

Trainer Mick Price says she’s now in good shape and deserving of another crack at elite level.

“She’s going super,” Price said. “It’s been a bit of a goal for Shamus (Mills) to run in the Group 1 and I’m expecting she’ll go well.”

Mark Zahra will ride the mare in the Sangster, looking to improve on last year’s fifth placing aboard Estriella.

The stable will also send Reserve Bank to Adelaide for the Group 2 Tobin Bronze Stakes (1200m), after his last-start win in the Redelva Stakes (1100m).

He was previously sixth in the William Reid Stakes (1200m) and is now hitting peak form, according to Price.

“He’s going to go back over,” Price said. “Some of these colts need a few runs to find their rhythm. I think he’s starting to do that now.”
