Torrens set for The Beauford at Newcastle

The winning Tatterstalls Club Cup team of Lauri Parker and Jenny Duggan will combine again in this Saturday’s $300,000 The Beauford at Newcastle.

It was the biggest win of both Lauri Parker and Jenny Duggan’s career when they teamed up to win the Listed Tatterstalls Club Cup at Randwick with Torrens, and they will be aiming to go back-to-back in the inaugural running of the The Beauford at Newcastle this Saturday.

The Adelaide entire was too strong on the line at the end of the 2400m staying test last time out, beating Savvy Valentino by a half length with Zeyrek a widening three lengths back in third, and the five-year-old will get in with a postage stamp on his back over the 2300m journey at Newcastle.

“He’s going to get in really well at the weights. Jenny (Duggan) will be able to ride him at 52kg’s because she’ll take 2kg off,” Parker said.

“It looks like a good race for him. He really is just an out and out stayer.”

The steer of Duggan in the Tattersalls Club Cup meant a lot to Parker, who being a former jockey herself more than understands the challenges that riders face in their careers.

“She’s been riding great at the moment,” Parker said.

“It’s a big thrill, especially as she’s an apprentice and you don’t often get the opportunities to ride in non-claiming races.”

Duggan, who has been riding in career-best form, is on the comeback from a horrific fall 18 months ago where she suffered multiple injuries including a fractured skull, fractured shoulder, bruising of the brain and a broken nose. Parker has been more than impressed with how tough she is and the way she has bounced back.

“She’s just a real inspiration to overcome the hurdles that she has and to be riding like she is at the moment,” Parker said.

“It’s pretty amazing.”

The only concern for Parker in the lead-up to the $300,000 feature is the wet weather that is forecast over the coming days.

“The rain is my only worry,” Parker said.

“He doesn’t like wet tracks at all, he’s just too big and heavy.

“He seems to sink in the ground. He’s a big lad.”
