Unbeaten Crosswinds on Moonee Valley weather watch

The Anthony and Sam Freedman stable has some good goals set for Crosswinds who is down to make his return at Moonee Valley.

Crosswinds and stablemate Latvian are scheduled to kick-off their spring three-year-old campaigns in the Listed McKenzie Stakes (1200m) on Saturday.

But a start is weather dependant and on the state of the track and if Crosswinds is scratched, the Group 3 McNeil Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on Saturday week could be his kick-off point.

Crosswinds was taken to The Valley on Tuesday to gallop but was not let off the bridle.

“We’re just mindful of the ground. We don’t want it too heavy,” Sam Freedman said.

“We don’t want to kick him off on a really bad surface, so we’re really mindful of that.

“The track on Tuesday morning was pretty heavy and chopped up. He got through it pretty good on the bridle and he wasn’t let off the bit.

“His rider thought his wheels might have spun if he was to go and get after him.”

Crosswinds is unbeaten in two starts winning on debut at Ballarat before taking out the Listed St Albans Stakes over Saturday’s course and distance in March.

The $1 million The Showdown was to be his next target, but a set-back forced him to miss that race.

“He would have been highly competitive in that race,” Freedman said.

“Instead, he went to Queensland, had a bit of time up there. He did a bit of work and got some sun on his back, and he’s come back in good order.

“He’s had two nice trials. He’s a lovely laid-back colt who only ever does what is asked of him at home and only tends to switch on come race day.

“We’ve got some good goals for him. A race like the (Group 1) Coolmore Stud Stakes, it’s sink or swim for the three-year-olds in the spring, so we’ll see where he measures up to.”

Latvian is owned in similar interests to Crosswinds and like his stablemate has not raced since winning over Saturday’s course and distance in March.
