Trainer Liam Howley, along with the connections of Luvya Mumma, has decided to head to Launceston in search of a prestigious ‘Black Type’ victory early in the filly’s career.

Howley selected the Listed Tasmanian Oaks (2100m) on Friday night after Luvya Mumma’s impressive maiden victory in a 1612m race at Kilmore on February 11.

Unable to find a suitable race in Victoria for the filly’s next step, Howley looked to Tasmania for a challenge that could serve as a valuable opportunity.

Winning this race would provide a ‘Black Type’ achievement for Luvya Mumma, which would be beneficial if she is bred later in her career.

“Her Kilmore win was straightforward, and we’ve always thought she would suit the 2000-metre distances,” Howley said.

“This race has come at the right time. In Victoria, there are few options available for developing horses into stayers.”

“It’s a step up, and she’ll need to meet the challenge, but I saw the nominations and realized this is the type of competition she’ll face at home, so I thought this trip would be a good opportunity to prepare her.”

Other Victorian fillies Suntora, Cinch, and Move The Torana have also traveled to Tasmania to race against six local three-year-olds.

Howley shared that Luvya Mumma traveled by boat to Launceston on Tuesday evening.

“Upon arrival, she went straight to the feed bin, so she’s in good condition,” Howley said.

“The only downside is that she’s still relatively inexperienced, and this is only her fifth start.”

“It’s a big deal for a three-year-old filly to travel, but we think she’s very smart, and this experience will hopefully make her stronger for future races.”
