The Australian Guineas remains a highlight of the Melbourne Autumn Carnival each year, and some of our best three-year-olds will be in action at Flemington on Saturday.
Victoria Derby winner Hitotsu will make his eagerly awaited return in the Australian Guineas, as will Spring Champion Stakes winner Profondo, alongside a host of talented milers.

Australian Guineas – Winner – No. 3 Profondo
It was hard not to become a Profondo fan instantly in spring, and he can make a winning return in the Australian Guineas.
He made just three appearances at the races, but Profondo put paid to a maiden field at Nowra on debut, before finishing a close second in the Group 3 Gloaming Stakes.
He went to the paddock after an utterly dominant display in the Spring Champion, and he has been set some lofty targets in spring, beginning with this race.
Australian Guineas – 2nd – No. 7 Lightsaber
This is a far more appropriate Group 1 target for Lightsaber, and he’ll be in the Australian Guineas for a long way.
The Peter Moody-trained colt won the VRC Sires’ Produce here at Flemington during his two-year-old season, and he continued to race consistently through a spring prep that was highlighted by a win in the Caulfield Guineas Prelude.
So far this time, he has finished fourth behind Marabi in the Australia Stakes and down the order in open company in the Neds C.F. Orr Stakes, but third-up, out to a mile and back to three-year-olds company, I think he’ll return a big performance.
Australian Guineas – 3rd – No. 2 Captivant
He is a very talented miler, and Captivant can fight out the finish of the Australian Guineas.
Captivant ended his two-year-old season with his first win at the highest level in the Champagne Stakes, and he proved in the spring that the mile is his best trip when finishing just half a length behind Anamoe in the Neds Caulfield Guineas.
He has improved for two starts back this time, including a close-up third in the CS Hayes Stakes a fortnight ago, and he is primed to strike third-up in the Australian Guineas.
Australian Guineas – 4th – No. 9 Pinstriped
This is a sizeable rise in class for him, but Pinstriped is yet to taste anything but success, and I think that he can return the Enver Jusofovic stable another big performance and result.
Pinstriped stamped himself as a horse to follow with a dominant win on debut at Moe in September, and he was immediately put away with a view towards the autumn.
He resumed with an eye-catching performance and win in the VOBIS Gold Carat and struck again in the CS Hayes Stakes last time.
