The Newmarket Handicap is easily one of the most exciting Group 1 contests of the autumn, and some of the country’s best sprinters will blaze down the famous Flemington straight six on Saturday.
Home Affairs stamped himself as one of the best three-year-olds, and indeed best horses in the country when beating home a stacked field in the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes three weeks ago, and he has opened our favourite in 2022 Newmarket Handicap betting.

Newmarket Handicap – Winner – No. 1 Masked Crusader
He didn’t show his best first-up in the Lightning Stakes, and despite topweights not having the best record in the Newmarket Handicap, Masked Crusader is the one that I want to be with.
The Toronado gelding has proven to be a bit of an enigma, but there is absolutely no denying his talent, and he recorded one of the wins of the Autumn Carnival last year when putting paid to them in the William Reid Stakes.
He remains one of the country’s best sprinters, he’ll love the 1200m and I’m confident that he can deliver us a lucrative win.
Newmarket Handicap – 2nd – No. 2 Home Affairs
He is quite clearly a star on the rise, he might be the best straight-tracker in the country, and Home Affairs could also very easily be the 2022 Newmarket Handicap winner.
He showed plenty of ability during his two-year-old season while still doing plenty wrong, but the spring was well and truly the making of him, and he ended the year with a dominant win in the Coolmore Stud Stakes.
The outside rail could well and truly be the place to be on Super Saturday, and if that is indeed the case, Home Affairs will take a power of beating.
Newmarket Handicap – 3rd – No. 8 Oxley Road
I’m actually very confident that Oxley Road will run a big race in the Newmarket Handicap, and I think that he is overs at his current $21 quote (at publish).
Peter Moody has done a great job with this horse, and he returned some bold performances during his spring prep, headlined by a win in the Group 2 Caulfield Sprint.
He was probably done by the track bias more than anything in the Rubiton Stakes first-up this time, he filled the minors of the Neds Oakleigh Plate last time, and he’s ready to peak third-up under ideal conditions in the Newmarket.
Newmarket Handicap – 4th – No. 16 Artorius
If you’re a regular reader of the Neds Blog, you’d be well aware of my almost unhealthy love of Artorius, and given that I haven’t put him on top, he’ll probably win the Newmarket Handicap.
In all seriousness, he is a very class colt, he’s a Group 1 winner, and he looks dangerous almost every time that he steps out.
It’s fair to say that he was a little flat in the Rubiton Stakes first-up this time, and that’s why I’ve only got him running fourth, but he’s an outstanding sprinter, and he’s a key winning chance in the Newmarket.
