Sydney Cup Tips, Bets and Race Preview – 2022

It doesn’t quite boast the grandeur of its Victorian counterpart, but that doesn’t make the Sydney Cup any less of a race, and I cannot wait for the staying feature on Day 2 of The Championships.

An open field of nineteen has been confirmed and Sydney Cup betting is a wide-open affair. At publish, the Neds bookies are up with $6 the field.

I’ve run the rule over every galloper, and you can find my complete 2022 Sydney Cup Tips below.

Sydney Cup – Winner – No. 5 Crystal Pegasus

He has been nothing short of outstanding this prep, and Crystal Pegasus can record a maiden Group 1 victory in the Sydney Cup.

The son of Australia finished second, beaten just over a length over 1500m at Rosehill when resuming and he simply hasn’t looked back, recording four outstanding victories in the wake.

He has improved with each start and as the bar has been raised, and he won ballot-free entry into the Caulfield Cup when reigning supreme in the Neds Mornington Cup a fortnight ago.

He’s untested at two miles, but everything suggests that he’ll get the trip, Jamie Rides, and has form on a rain-affected track.

Sydney Cup – 2nd – No. 1 The Chosen One

He was well beaten, but kept on coming into the minors of the Tancred Stakes last time and importantly, we know that The Chosen One will relish two miles in the Sydney Cup.

The Savabeel entire has been a strong and consistent performer in Australasia’s best races for many seasons now, performing well in a couple of Melbourne Cups and a Caulfield Cup, most notably.

He finally broke through for a deserved Group 1 win in the Thorndon Mile earlier this year, and he steps out this week in peak order, and ready to strike again.

Sydney Cup – 3rd – No. 13 Chalk Stream

Her Majesty The Queen is a serious chance of winning an Australian Group 1 feature on Saturday, when her talented stayer Chalk Stream takes his place in the Sydney Cup field.

Chalk Stream stamped himself as one to watch with some eye-catching performances in the UK earlier in his career, but he needed his first run in a BM88 race when arriving in Australia, to shake off the cobwebs.

He steps out this week third-up and following an excellent performance for third in the Group 3 Queen’s Cup over a mile and a half, and I’m confident he’ll be in the finish of this race as well.

Sydney Cup – 4th – No. 11 Surefire

Another former Brit who looks well placed in the 2022 Sydney Cup field is Surefire.

Surefire ended his UK tenure with consecutive wins at Leicester and Royal Ascot, and picked up in Australia where he left off with an impressive win in BM88 company here at Randwick.

He was only just denied by No Compromise in the Queen’s Cup, and he’s another in the Sydney Cup field who looks ready to peak third-up, and out to two miles.
