Eclipsion gets on board at Mornington races

Punters had few concerns with odds-on favourite Eclipsion finally breaking through for his maiden success at Mornington.

Now in the care of Greg Eurell at Cranbourne, Eclipsion had stints with Peter and Paul Snowden as well at the stable of Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young, both without racing, before having seven runs for Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr.

Eclipsion was transferred into Eurell’s care in October and ran second at his first start for his new stable at Kilmore last month.

Lining up in the Flex 23 Asphalting Plate (1600m) at Mornington on Wednesday, Eclipsion had the race in his keeping a long way from home.

Ridden by Ben Allen and sent off the $1.45 favourite, Eclipsion scored a 2-¾ length win from Golden Mask ($6.50) with Wokou ($18) a further three-quarters-of-a-length away third.

“He came to us in great shape,” Eurell told racing.com.

“There was no doubt about that, and we just had to work on that from there.

“He’s a lovely horse and we enjoy working with him.

“Once he gave that little kick at the turn, he had them all off the bridle and it was done and dusted, and I liked the way he held on to the lead.

“Sometimes when you kick away like he did you get run down, but he kept good momentum up to the line and we may give him an attempt at something further.”

Allen made the trip to Mornington for one ride and was impressed with how Eclipsion went about his work.

While Eclipsion wore blinkers in Wednesday’s victory, Allen said the gelding may appreciate a different form of headgear when he next lines up.

“I think he might be better with a visor on,” Allen said.

“He travelled super with a horse to follow, but when he gets in front, he gets a bit lost.

“I feel he’s still got a bit left in the tank, so maybe he needs some tinkering with some headgear.

“I think the horse is slowly working it out.”
